When “I Don’t Know What I’m Doing” Says Everything

A serene moment of a woman in a cosy room, enjoying leisure time by the window.

“I don’t know what I’m doing.” This isn’t a Failure – It’s a Signal

Annie* started with “I don’t know what I’m doing”.
And I heard everything she meant in those few words.

Annie wasn’t confused or failing, she was tired. She’d been holding too much for too long. Work, family, decisions. Emotions she hadn’t really had space for. Annie was coping well enough to outsiders getting on with it as you do, so no one worried about her, including herself.

When people say “I don’t know what I’m doing”, it’s rarely about not knowing, it’s overload. You’ve been absorbing too much for too long. Thinking feels so hard! Simple choices are so difficult to make. Every small thing take more effort than they should.

Annie didn’t need a plan or advice, and she didn’t need fixing. She needed someone to see her, notice her and give permission to stop forcing clarity when life is dark. We slowed it right down, nothing dramatic, no big life questions, just enough space for her body to catch up with her mind. To notice the pressure she’d been living inside without realising it.

The “I don’t know” didn’t turn into answers, it softened into steadiness, comfort, and release.

And from there, things began to make sense again, quietly, in their own time. If you’ve been saying “I don’t know what I’m doing”, listen to that. Just don’t hear it as failure, hear it as a signal that you’re carrying too much. This is a cue to pause, not push on and do more. Clarity comes after safety, not before.

You don’t need to know everything right now, what you know is more than enough. You need this one moment of ground beneath you, and that is just right and enough to begin with.

If this resonated, you don’t need to rush it, it’s quite enough to recognise yourself in the words and let that be a pause. And if you ever want a quiet, steady space to slow things down and make sense of what you’re carrying, that’s the work I do.

Theres no pressure or fixing, just space to breathe and find your footing again. You can find more about working with me here, when and if it feels right.
